Call for Papers for TOEBI 2026

The TOEBI Annual Meeting for 2026 will be held on Saturday, 24 October 2026, at University of Nottingham.

The theme of the Annual Meeting is “All Kinds of People”. We invite contributions to the following topics:

  1. Syllabus swap: we invite five- to ten-minute presentations on successful courses/modules in the fields of Old English language, culture and/or literature as well as approaches which make Old English accessible to a wider community of learners.
  2. Beyond the Essay: a roundtable for which we invite short presentations (five to seven minutes) on assessments that are different from the traditional essay/exam. We particularly invite suggestions on forms of assessment which either address the use of AI or discourage using it.
  3. The third strand invites twenty-minute papers on the teaching of diversity. Early Medieval England was home to all kinds of people, from the British to Germanic settlers, from people from as far afield as West Africa to the Vikings: this was a multicultural and multilingual society. We welcome papers on any aspect of diversity, such as impairment, occupation, class, age, language, migration and settlement.

Contributions may be in a variety of presentation formats, including posters or creative presentations. Please submit abstracts of around 200 words to Christina Lee (christina.lee@nottingham.ac.uk) by 30 March 2026.

TOEBI is a supportive and collegial conference, open to anyone involved in the teaching of Old English at any level.
